Lilli Tauber wuchs in Wiener Neustadt, einer österreichischen Kleinstadt bei Wien auf, wo ihre Eltern ein Herrenbekleidungsgeschäft besaßen.
Dann kam der Anschluss im März 1938, und Lilli durfte nicht mehr länger das Gymnasium besuchen. Am 10. November 1938 - im Zuge des Novemberpogroms - wurde ihr Vater wie viele andere jüdische Männer verhaftet. Als ihr Vater wieder freigelassen wurde, versuchten Lillis Eltern verzweifelt, Lilli aus Österreich herauszubekommen. So schickten sie Lilli schließlich per Kindertransport nach England.
Aus Großbritannien schrieb Lilli unzählige Briefe an ihre Eltern, und diese schrieben zurück - bis sie in ein Ghetto in Polen deportiert wurden. Nach Kriegsende kehrte Lilli zurück, um ihre Eltern in Wien zu suchen. Alles, was sie vorfand, war ein Koffer voller Briefe und Bilder, die ihre Eltern an Verwandte in Wien geschickt hatten.
