My father's generation - my father and his brothers - were all shaven Jews, who met at my grandfather's on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, all together, including me, the oldest grandson, and went to pray at 6 Brzozowa Street, to the ‘besmedrisz' [Yiddish: bes medresh, Hebrew:, bejt ha-midrash - the house of learning] across from the Hebrew secondary school.
