Aunt Shprintsia and her husband were religious people. They celebrated Sabbath and Jewish holidays and went to the synagogue. Their sons studied in cheder, but neither wanted to go there. Israel, the older one, used to hide in the attic to avoid going to cheder. In the 1920s many children had atheistic ideas.
