I stayed there for a month, and on 22nd June 1941, all of us found out about the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War [25]. Germany attacked us despite the non-aggression agreement. There were fierce battles, and on 28th June, our regiment was sent in the lines to the district of Vyazma, out of Smolensk. The regiment took a couple of echelons. Cannons were loaded on the open platforms. They were thoroughly fastened and disguised.
