This photo shows part of the boys from the Sixth Labor Battalion that were concentrated in Cemerne in 1941. This is how we stood in like for lunch. Usually I was the tallest of the boys, and they would then be queued behind me and a primitive drill would follow. Right face, left face... I never respected it.
In the photo I'm the fifth from the left. The second from the left was named Alino Weinman. He was a very strong boy. The two of us were considered to be the strongest. We were afraid of each other. In civilian life Alino was a plumber. If he would have knocked me down with his strong arm, he'd have killed me. But I, on the other hand, was an athlete and was capable of dodging him and giving a well-placed blow. So we respected each other. The eighth from the right was Michal Bachner. He survived the war and currently lives in Israel. The poor guy went blind, though.
