My great-grandfather, Zundel Grinberg, was a cantonist [1] serving in Nikolai’s army [2]. I don’t know how many years he was in the army, but I presume it was for a long time. He retired in the rank of sergeant major and had the right to live within the Jewish Pale of Settlement [3].
