In the 1950s and 1960s there were still a lot of religious people. In fact, it was a little bit like the Bundists and Zionists were before the war. There was also a fair group of communist activists. Quite a lot of American aid came in through Joint. There were the Jewish ‘Solidarnosc’ [23] works, where they taught different trades, and Slobodkin – the one I was in Bashkiria with – was the head of ORT [24].
