My grandmother Vintoura used to tell me that at the time of the Liberation [Russian-Turkish Liberation War (1877-78)] [3] she was only six years old. At that time they settled in Sofia after they had run away from the town of Ferdinand [then Koutlovitsa][4]. She didn’t know whether she had been born in Ferdinand. The only thing she remembered was that they had moved to Sofia on donkeys.
