The years of my study at the Pedagogical College, 1924-29, were the years of the New Economic Policy [NEP] [5] of the Soviet government. It was the end of the famine [6]. The stores were selling beautiful clothes, white flour and white bread. I hadn't seen them since my early childhood. But we were extremely poor and couldn't afford them. I remember going on tour to Moscow, wearing shoes with holes and a light jacket. It was winter and the temperature was 25 degrees below zero.
